The American College of Radiology (ACR) has voiced opposition to proposed changes by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regarding radiation safety in medicine. The NRC's suggested revisions would replace the current “as low as reasonably achievable” standard with a new graded approach, requiring providers to obtain written consent from patients receiving certain treatments before they can be discharged from the hospital. ACR's CEO, Dana H. Smetherman, criticized these changes as creating unnecessary compliance burdens without a solid risk-based rationale. ACR argues that consent requirements should only apply when radiation doses to caregivers exceed a specific limit and urges flexibility in obtaining consent. The organization also expressed concerns over ambiguous regulatory changes that may complicate patient release determinations and impact intended care delivery. Other parties, including the New Mexico attorney general, have echoed these concerns. The proposed rule is part of the NRC's broader initiative to align with a 2025 reform executive order.
